AutisMIND is a tool for therapists, parents and other professionals to work and improve Theory of Mind in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Autistic kids usually display impairments in social thinking and Theory of Mind, the ability to infer mental states of others and adapt our behaviour accordingly. This means it’s hard for them to understand what others think, feel or want or to grasp contextual information. And that in turn leads to difficulties in social interactions.
AutisMIND is a structured app with 10 different subjects, divided in 6 levels of difficulty, with more than 1,000 exercises to work on the cognitive skills needed to develop a Theory of Mind. It requires the presence of a parent or professional to support the child while remaining interesting and motivating.
Some of its major characteristics are:
even without assistance
The children know every time whether their answer is correct and they gain verbal and visual rewards which become more attractive as more exercises are completed.
Help is provided when the child choses a wrong answer, so frustration is avoided (a very common problem when autistic children get stuck). In addition, after some practice, but before increasing the difficulty, the wrong exercises are presented again, this time without the help provided.
All the data are automatically registered and can be consulted in the statistics menu. The data include the answer time response, the total amount of time the child spent in every level and the total number of mistakes.
The app features simple draws, easier to understand for autistic kids, but it also works with real photos, with more details and information to process, but more realistic so as to promote skills generalisation.
